'Had he had an EKG this would have been picked up much sooner': School nurse in Boca Raton saves student
METV. A LOCAL SCHOOL NURSE MADE A QUICK LIFE SAVING DECISION WHEN A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CAME TO HER AFTER HE BRIEFLY BLACKED OUT IN THE CAFETERIA. AND IT ALMOST DIDN’T HAPPEN. ANGELA ROZIER SAT DOWN WITH THAT PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOL NURSE, THE STUDENT AND HIS MOTHER, WHO SHARED A STORY THEY HOPE MIGHT SAVE SOMEONE ELSE. 911 WHAT’S THE ADDRESS OF YOUR EMERGENCY? AND AS I WAS IN THE LUNCH LINE ENTERING THE CAFETERIA, OCTOBER 27TH IS A DAY. SILVIO, DON’T FORGET, I LIKE FELT MY HEART RACING ALL OF A SUDDEN. VERY, VERY HARD. SO I CHECKED MY APPLE WATCH AND MY APPLE WATCH SAID MY HEART RATE WAS AT 147 BEATS PER MINUTE. THE 11TH GRADE OLYMPIC HEIGHTS COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CALLED HIS FATHER, WHO, ALONG WITH CLASSMATES, CONVINCED HIM TO GO SEE THE SCHOOL NURSE IMMEDIATELY, WHO SAYS IF HE HAD NOT COME WHEN HE DID, THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE ENDED DIFFERENTLY. HE COULD HAVE ACTUALLY HAD A CARDIAC ARREST. IT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN TOO MUCH LONGER. HIS HEART CAN’T. YOU CAN’T TOLERATE THAT. SHE CALLED PARAMEDICS AND THEY RUSHED SILVIO TO A NEARBY HOSPITAL WHERE DOCTORS PERFORMED AN EKG. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, HE WAS FLOWN TO NICHOLAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN MIAMI, WHERE HE RECEIVED EMERGENCY SURGERY TO GET HIS HEART BACK ON TRACK. HE HAD WOLFF-PARKINSON-WHITE SYNDROME, SO HE WAS BORN WITH AN EXTRA ELECTRICAL PATHWAY AND IN HIS CASE HE ACTUALLY HAD TWO ELECTRICAL PATHWAYS THAT WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE. HAD HE HAD AN EKG, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN PICKED UP MUCH SOONER. HIS MOTHER, WHO HAS BEEN BY HIS SIDE, HAS A MESSAGE FOR OTHERS. I REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT WHAT EKGS IN CHILDREN, NUMBER ONE, BUT TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND TO HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR SCHO
